Does minifying JSON lose any data?

No. Only whitespace between tokens is removed. Parsing the minified text produces exactly the same object as the original.

Will minifying remove spaces inside my string values?

No. A value like "New York" keeps its space. Only formatting whitespace outside of strings is stripped.

What minifying does

Minifying removes the insignificant whitespace between tokens — indentation, spaces after colons and commas, and line breaks. The data is identical; only the formatting is gone. This object:

What it does NOT change

Whitespace inside string values is kept — "New York" stays "New York". Minifying also never reorders keys, drops nulls, or changes numbers. It is loss-free: pretty-printing the result gives you back the original structure.

When to minify

Use it to reduce the size of API responses and config blobs, or when you must paste JSON into a single-line field (an environment variable, a URL query string, a database column). For network payloads, gzip usually saves far more than minifying does — minify mainly for the single-line requirement, not as a compression strategy.
